The heart of the Centre

The heart of Bowen Early Childhood Education Centre’s Philosophy is to embrace relationships through the principle of Whānaungatanga (the extended family concept). Aroha (love) underpins and supports the warm, trusting and reciprocal relationships between kaitiaki (staff) and tamariki (children) and their whānau. This is foundational in fostering Ūkaipōtanga , as when tamariki, whanau and kaitiaki develop a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing and their identity is nurtured, they can contribute, growing to be confident and capable in what they do.

Learning Philosophy

Bowen’s team

Our centre prides itself on quality interactions with children and their whanau.  We maintain quality teacher: child ratios at a minimum ratio of 1:3 for children under two years old and 1:6 for children over two years old, which exceed the Ministry of Education requirements.  All teachers hold current first-aid certificates and all staff participate in on-going professional development.

Meals at Bowen

We are a member of the Heart Foundation’s programme which promotes healthy eating and physical activity to under 5s and their families. Our Pā Harakeke award level recognises the strengthening of our healthy eating and physical activity knowledge base. We always have a selection of seasonal fresh fruit and water is available with every meal and throughout the day from the water cooler, and we also serve milk with afternoon tea.

Parent involvement

An important part of Bowen’s philosophy is the involvement of parents and family.

Parents are invited to join us on trips and to spend time at the centre with their children. We’re more than just a daycare, we’re a community. We rely on Ministry of Education funding and community fundraising to provide a great play and learning environment.

You can tell when you walk in the door that we’ve got a great community of children, parents, and staff. It’s okay to get involved simply by staying and playing for a while.
