Meals at Bowen

We are a member of the Heart Foundation’s programme which promotes healthy eating and physical activity to under 5s and their families. Our Pā Harakeke award level recognises the strengthening of our healthy eating and physical activity knowledge base. We always have a selection of seasonal fresh fruit and water is available with every meal and throughout the day from the water cooler, and we also serve milk with afternoon tea.

Baking with the kids

At least once a week our teachers and children get hands on baking afternoon tea. We’ve baked muffins, mouse-traps, pikelets, fruit bread, scones, and a whole lot more.

Morning tea

Morning tea always includes fresh fruit and rotates daily between wholemeal toast, fruit toast, and yoghurt. It is a rolling meal, which means the children can come to the table any time between 9:00am and 9:45am.

Lunch

Our lunch menu rotates weekly but always includes fresh fruit. Example meals include: chicken noodle stir-fry with peppers, courgettes, and broccoli; crumbed fish with potato wedge and baked beans; wholemeal sandwiches with salad; and spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread. We serve lunch at approximately 11:35am for under-twos and 11:45am for over-twos. We also cater for any special dietary requirements.

Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea always includes fresh fruit and milk. Throughout the week we have a range of baking both savoury and sweet and at least once a week it includes baking by the children themselves.

Healthy Heart award

Bowen has maintained our Pā Harakeke Award (Gold) from the Heart Foundation. This award celebrates how Bowen (including the staff, families and children) offers an environment that promoting healthy eating and physical exercise. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the children, parents, teachers and management who helped us achieve our gold rating.
